How to properly roll your designer shirts

Believe it or not, rolling the sleeves of high end men’s dress shirts is an art and if done improperly, leave your outfit looking sloppy. So, whether you’ve entered the white-collared workforce or are looking for more reasons to dress smart casual, you’ll quickly realize that your sleeves can make or break your look. The following four rolls will allow you to increase the formality of your wardrobe or tone it down for more casual events.

The military roll

Although this style seems strict due to its name, it’s a classic way to roll up your shirt sleeves so that you can look chic and sophisticated. However, while this quick-fix roll is a simple technique, its firm history in the military uniform means precision and neatness are the epitome of its look.

So, if you’re looking to execute the military roll, here are the steps:

  • Step #1: Unbutton the cuffs of your high end men’s dress shirt and smooth out any creases in the sleeves.
  • Step #2: Gold the sleeve so that the cuff reaches the inside of your elbow
  • Step #3: Fold from the bottom of the sleeve to cover the cuff.
  • Step #4: To undo, hold the top edge of the cuff and pull down.

The forearm roll

When it comes to rolling up the sleeves of your high end men’s dress shirts, the forearm roll is the most casual of rolls and the perfect look for an on-the-go gent. This technique reveals a third of your arm, giving a structured, relaxed look that doesn’t hinder style.

Here’s how it’s done:

  • Step #1: Unbutton the cuffs and smooth out any creases in your sleeves.
  • Step #2: Fold each sleeve back once to the width of the cuff.
  • Step #3: Fold once again, a cuff’s width.
  • Step #4: Run your hands on the inside to ensure that your roll is loose and comfy.

The high roller

Whether you like the look or take pride in your physique, the higher roll extends an invitation to the gun show. However, this roll is best achieved when its wearer does it before putting on their shirt for the day.

Continue reading for a step-by-step guide to the high roller:

  • Step #1: Fold your sleeve back to the width of the cuff.
  • Step #2: Repeat the first step until the fold is covered, hiding the cuff.
  • Step #3: Fold once again until the cuff sits directly above your elbow.

The basic roll

Out of all the techniques we’ve explained thus far, this one is the go-to for gents that want a simple and effective roll for their high end men’s dress shirts. Whether your shirt is long-sleeved casual or a semi-formal style that boasts wider arms, this roll is a comfortable choice.

  • Step #1: Unbutton the cuffs of your shirt and smooth out the creases.
  • Step #2: Fold your sleeve back, about the width of the cuff.
  • Step #3: Run your hands along the inside of your shirt to ensure that the roll is loose and smooth.
  • Step #4: Repeat the above steps on your second roll and ensure that your sleeve sits above your elbow.
