Why are designer clothes and accessories more costly?

It’s often assumed that when you buy men’s designer clothing you are only paying for the name or the brand, but that the product doesn’t necessarily differ in quality. However, in our experience working in fashion, this is usually not the case. In fact, most instances point to the fact that mass-market clothing and accessory companies are making more money overall than luxury brands. Let’s take a look at why luxury brands carry that hefty price tag and exceptional longevity over cheaper options.

You can’t beat the quality

Not only can you feel the difference when you wear men’s designer clothing but the quality of the design, the construction, the fabrics, the trims (zippers, buttons, etc.), the stitching, the thread used for the stitching, the interlinings, the finishing techniques, the paper used on the hang tags, the way they hang tags are attached, the labels, the way the labels are attached, and the quality of the packaging are all examples of why luxury brands outlast mass-market clothing and accessories. 

Handmade in the west

While mass-marketing clothing and accessories are likely produced in factories across China, Bangladesh, and other southeast Asian countries where labor conditions are fair, luxury brands are produced in Europe or the United States where the cost of labor is high. This handmade quality may increase the costs but also adds to the quality of the finished product. 

More unique

Everything from the design of the items, the choices of colors, the fabrics, and other customizations are uniquely designed for a specific lineup, meaning that some men’s designer clothing is released in limited quantities and then once sold out, not available to consumers. Plus, these luxury items take more time to develop and require designers and product development staff, which takes more talent, time, and money, which is then reflected in the final price tag. 

A degree of exclusivity 

Since luxury brands tend to produce limited quantities of men’s designer clothing, the cost per unit from the factory will be much higher than mass-produced garments. Plus, the general business overheads will be higher when fewer units are produced. So, if you want to own something that fewer gents have, generally it might cost you a bit more. But you can pay for those bragging rights.
